The Pizza Day Everyone Waited For

— From the BeforeNoise Notebook, Illinois, 1980s

At our school, everyone knew when it was pizza day.

You could smell it before lunch even started. By the time we lined up with our trays, people were already talking about who would trade their dessert for an extra slice.

The pizza was square, the cheese was too hot, and the cafeteria was louder than usual.

I do not remember most of the things we learned that week, but I remember sitting with my friends, peeling the cheese off the top, and hoping there would be enough left when our class reached the line.

It was just school lunch, but it felt like an event.
