There was a small candy store a few blocks from our school, and almost every kid knew it.
We would stop there after class with coins in our pockets, trying to decide what to buy. The shelves were crowded with gum, chocolate bars, licorice, candy necklaces, and little toys near the register.
The owner seemed to know every child in the neighborhood. Sometimes we went in just to look, even when we did not have enough money for much.
It felt like a tiny world made for kids — colorful, simple, and exciting in a way that is hard to explain now.
