One Television in the Living Room

— From the BeforeNoise Notebook, Pennsylvania, 1970s

We had one television in the living room, and everyone watched whatever was on.

On Saturday mornings, I would wake up before anyone else, pour a bowl of cereal, and sit as close to the TV as I was allowed. The picture was not always clear, and sometimes someone had to adjust the antenna, but it did not matter.

The cartoons felt special because they only came once a week. If you missed them, you had to wait.

I think what I miss most is not only the shows. I miss the quiet house, the cereal bowl, the old couch, and the feeling that Saturday morning belonged to us kids.
